Distraction

We swim in distraction, deviation and destitution. Much of our present is dipped in aviation, as we strain and stress and steep our bucket lists in vast, expansive plains.

Our worlds echo huge appetites and we are accelerated in an endless rush. Distractions become pockets of purposelessness and places to run and refuge our wildest desires.

We seek a sweetness to lift the tension and we seek an outlet to contain and contour the load. We look to free a part of ourselves that yearns to be heard, seen and understood. That yearns perhaps for help or something to rest on.

We seek validation, reward and pleasure. To tip the balance away from our motives and goals and liberate time and choice back to us.

The temptation of distraction is often necessary - often meeting a greater need for pause, for patience and for rest. So listen to that voice, that call for avoidance and deviation. It is human. It is necessary.

At times we need to apply some dialogue and self control in order to keep the balance and not lose ourselves completely. At other times, it is the the reverse we need. Be is a nap, a day off, an afternoon spent doing something with our hands, our voices, our hearts.

Change is important. Distraction is the body asking for variation, asking for breadth and asking for something else.

Listen to that - with insight, empathy and honesty. Give yourself what you need. What will restore vitality, expanse and health into your day and lift your perception in this moment.

Try something different - rather than getting off course, get into another course. Try a running group, choir, yoga class, teach a language, riding lesson or volunteer activity.

Use that call to be distracted to implement a variable, to introduce a new activity, skill, conversation or connection.

Rather than using it to scroll your phone, to deviate from your values, beat yourself up or reach for a snack. Take a moment to change the action and introduce something new.
